Elastomeric Expansion Joint

Elastomeric expansion joints (code EXJ ™ T80) of Afzir Company are available in four types: T140, T120, T100, T80, which are made of a material called elastomer, the raw materials of which are made in Germany. These imported elastomers are a type of high-strength rubber that has high temperature flexibility and high compressive strength. Elastomeric expansion joint rubber has been used since 1950 as a suitable tool to reduce and distribute the forces due to traffic on bridges and other structures, and this use continues to this day in most bridges. Expansion joint elastomeric rubber with high ability against vibrations, will greatly help to protect the structure against natural factors such as earthquakes and temperature fluctuations. Expansion joint rubber can be used to deal with cracks caused by expansion and contraction, friction and vibration, and to take good preventive measures in structures such as bridges. Afzir Company is one of the active companies in Iran in the field of supplying bridge equipment, which has been operating in this field with a long history and high experience, and has been the executor of major national projects in this field. The expansion joint has a vital application in the bridge structure and reduces maintenance costs and significantly increases the life of the structure.

This expansion joint is a kind of highway bridge expansion joint product which is designed according to the principle; When high elasticity of rubber changes with temperature, the bridge floor will generate expansion deformation. The rubber expansion joint has the advantages of convenient installation, stable and smooth running, waterproof, dust-proof, low noise, light weight and low cost.  When install this product, the bolt hole and the joint of each meter will be filled with adhesive, which can assure the products has good water-proof property. This product is made by aging resistant and wear-resistant rubber. It can withstand load of vehicles repeatedly and has a long service life.

The lengths of structural elements, and of superstructures in particular, change as a result of materials shrinkage, temperature fluctuations and loading variations – perhaps many times in the course of their lives. To avoid surface cracking and possibly more serious damage, the length of each individual structural element is often limited, with gaps between elements to allow movements. These gaps must be bridged over, and made trafficable if appropriate, in every state of expansion. Expansion joints of steel or aluminum offer well-proven solutions. These facilitate variations in length without constraints and cracking, protect the surfaces of adjacent structural elements, and, if necessary, prevent the ingress of water.

In fact, it can be said that using expansion joint is one of the methods to deal with damage caused by natural factors such as storms and clear fluctuations. Afzir incremental expansion joint is used to prevent the causes and factors caused by the expansion and contraction of the bridge due to environmental changes and natural factors in the bridges. The installation location and distances of the expansion joint of the bridge depend on various factors such as the bridge, the type of land and the weather conditions of the bridge construction site. The geometric shape of the bridge structure is very effective in the number, type and characteristics of the bridge expansion joint. Elastomeric expansion joint rubber has an effect on the efficiency of an expansion joint. These expansion joints of the bridge cause the bridge to be connected and prevented from breaking, and due to the traffic and friction created by the bridge, it increases the service life of the structure and also increases the force resistance. Expansion joint is an important factor in the proper operation of the bridge.

Improper operation of expansion joints can cause many problems such as increased maintenance costs, cracks and so on. Afzir elastomeric expansion joints are non-structural components that are implemented by providing ease of passage over the gap between the bridge deck components and prevent damage due to the transfer and rotational movements of the slabs relative to each other. Transitional and rotational movements due to various causes in the structure such as thermal expansion and contraction, shrinkage or creep, elastic shortening due to pre-stressing, displacement of the structure due to load, or any other factor that causes the bridge slabs to move and rotation.

Elastomeric expansion joint is used for a variety of structures, especially stairs. This product with high strength and the mentioned features, has many applications, which can be used in a variety of concrete and steel structures, bicycle paths, sidewalks, railway stairs, bridges and longitudinal joints, hospitals, parking lots and Etc. However, the most common use of expansion joints is in stairs. Also, by installing elastomeric expansion joints in old bridges without expansion joints, the following goals and results can be achieved in the field of reinforcement, reconstruction and replacement of various types of bridge expansion joints.

One of the important factors in retrofitting is the cost of the project. You may be wondering what is the price of an elastomeric expansion joint? Or in general, how much budget is needed to supply and implement the expansion joint? The price of expansion joint depends on several factors such as currency price, purchase amount and Etc. We recommend that you inquire about price from expansion joint sales companies such as Afzir Company. Afzir Company is active in the field of selling the expansion joint of the bridge, and customers and contractors can inquire about the amount of materials required for the purchase and the price of the expansion joint by making a call, after receiving advice from the company’s experts.

Application Instructions

Step 1: Installation of steel plate and asphalt paving of the surface and cutting and removing the concrete of the bridge deck with a width of 65-70 cm in the place of expansion joint

Step 2: Reinforcement and planting of cane reinforcement to connect old concrete reinforcement to new one

Step 3: Molding at the expansion joint based on the geometric dimensions of the expansion joint rubber, taking into account the possibility of pouring primer and grout to connect the old concrete to the new one

Step 4: Marking the drilling points on the newly poured grout according to the holes in the expansion joint rubber

Step 5: Drilling with a diameter of 20 mm and a depth of at least 170 mm and implanting a galvanized bolt size 16 mm using rebar implant adhesive

Step 6: Install a sealing curtain or PVC sealing fabric on the grout surface to direct the adsorbed surface water out of the expansion joint system

Step 7: Installing or replacing the expansion joint rubber – The surface to be installed for the elastomeric expansion joint should be smooth and clean and free of dust, grease, oil and grease as well as possible large cavities should be filled with a Afzir company special mortar. Rugged areas should also be leveled with a suitable leveling mortar or putty

Step 8: Filling the holes and seams in the rubber of expansion joints and other surfaces with depressions with Afzir company environmentally resistant sealing mastic

Afzir Reinforcement Company recommends that care be taken with regard to the issue of depth and placement of bolts, because failure to plant at the recommended depth, connection of new concrete to old concrete and connection of the two to the elastomeric expansion joint system is not done properly and the possibility of separation in The passage of time will go very high. Observance of the principles of expansion joints is of special importance, therefore, it is recommended that the installation and execution of elastomeric expansion joints be performed by specialized and trained people.

Note that concrete damage and corrosion of steel must be repaired with a special epoxy-based repair mortar of Afzir Company before using the expansion joint rubber.

Also, the expansion joint can be cut using a milling machine and all safety regulation can be observed. Do not cut this product with high heat.
